What a wonderful weekend for the Gengler Cup matches 2024!
Players arrived on a very hot and steamy Friday afternoon for practice on the grass courts at
the beautiful Piping Rock Club. It was a pleasure to meet and greet our US team consisting of
players from up and down east coast, from Kentucky, and California. Our Canadian friends
arrived after a very long drive from Toronto and elsewhere and jumped on the courts to get in
their practice. With plenty of good tennis already under our belts we later met up with the
men’s teams from the Sorlien Cup and Bakers Bowl and all the Canadian players for a lovely
welcoming dinner held at the Basil Leaf Café in Locust Valley. It was an opportunity to connect
and reconnect with our USIC teammates and the Canadian players both familiar and new.
Saturday brough more excessive heat and humidity, but everyone played through as best they
could. The US women got off to strong start in the first round with a competitive 5 to 1 lead in
the morning play. The rains then came, and the women took to the nearby indoor courts to get
in a shortened round two. With several very tight matches, USIC won that round 3-2 to take a
comfortable not insurmountable lead 8 to 3.
Saturday evening, the IC banquet was held at the main clubhouse of the Piping Rock Club. It
was a pleasure to relax among friends from both sides of the court. The men’s and women’s
captains spoke eloquently about the values and strength of tennis to bring us all together. The
IC spirit of friendships through international competition was very present.
Sunday brough out the best play for the Americans. Stepping up to any threat of losing our
lead, the team won 4 of the 5 matches to secure the Gengler Cup, and complete back-to-back
wins 2023, 2024. The Canadians have been tough to defeat in recent years as they have
brought strong and deep teams for fierce completion. It was cheers to a strong USIC team with
several new members who played well and delivered the win. Win or lose, the event is a
highlight for participants enjoying the high level of international competition, friendships
through tennis, sportsmanship, and the lovely Piping Rock Club venue.
